Ages: 6 and up.

Very few students perform at their true potential. As Berkira's flagship program, the Strategies program gives students all the tools they need in order to learn on their own. The following are strategies utilized in the program.

Auditory Processing Skills - If this is a student's weakness, it's not a hearing impairment, but rather the student does not have the ability to distinguish between similar sounds and words. Many students simply do not have the ability to understand or recall what was heard.

Visualization Skills - The process of creating strong internal mental images with complete understanding. This process will teach students how to retain information for the long term. 

Word Decoding - To extract meaning from written or spoken symbols (letters). The ability to match symbols to sounds.

Reading Comprehension - The level of understanding from a passage or text. Our unique advanced learning methods teach students how to thoroughly understand what they are reading. 

Spelling - Proper spelling is vital for full understanding of passages either through writing or reading. 

Vocabulary - The ability to understand the definition of words. We teach students how to place words into their long-term memory for easy retrieval at any time.

Study Skills - Wanting to gain personal knowledge and learning how to achieve a higher understanding of any subject matter.  

Verbal Skills - The ability to express thoughts through the spoken word.

Long-Term Memory - The ability to recall information that has been learned. This is important because most students have great short-term recall, easily regurgitating information, but have never learned how to retain it beyond the next test.

Writing Skills - Organizing thoughts and gaining the ability to fully understand the subject matter in order to apply it in written form.

Organizational skills - Using strategies that are based on sequential ordering so the student can learn how to organize thoughts and papers properly and efficiently.

Challenging concepts - We are happy to work with any student who wants to be challenged on a regular basis. Everyone including gifted and developmentally challenged children are welcome.

Ordinarily, students are never taught how to learn, they are simply given subject matter. True learning means being able to express a concept orally or in writing with full understanding, confidently and permanently.

The Berkira Learning Strategies course will: 

Individualized instruction or no more than two students per classroom. A short test will be administered to determine each child's strengths and weaknesses and the program will be personalized accordingly.
